Legal Assistant
International Bridges to Justice (“IBJ) (国际司法桥梁) supports the continued development of China’s criminal justice system and promotes increased awareness of the rights of accused persons. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Justice’s National Legal Aid program, leading universities and bar associations, IBJ provides practical training, material support and technical assistance to defense lawyers and others working within the justice community. IBJ’s programming strengthens the capacity of China’s rapidly expanding indigent criminal defense systems as well as the quality of the defense bar. IBJ is a non-governmental, non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Currently IBJ is seeking applicants from resident Chinese nationals for the position of Legal Assistant, to be based in IBJ’s Beijing Office.
Primary Responsibilities
• Support programming and project activities
• Coordinate with partners and maintain relationships
• Conduct legal research and write reports on ongoing and developing trends within the criminal justice field.
• Translate documents and interpret at trainings and meetings
• Provide other logistical support as required
The legal assistant will report to the IBJ’s Directors and Program Coordinator.
Qualifications
• University Degree in Law
• Strong interest in criminal defense and/or legal aid
• Fluent in written and oral English
• Knowledge of Chinese legal system, especially in substantive and procedural criminal law
• Willingness to travel, both within China and possibly abroad
• Detail oriented, able to manage multiple tasks
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
