Job Purpose
Undertaking the EPSRC-funded research project.
Main Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the appointee shall:
•Manage the research project;
•Research techniques and computer algorithms;
•Develop software tools;
•Produce demonstrations;
•Write technical reports and publications;
•Liaise with project partners in UCL and University of Lancaster;
•Attend meetings and conferences as required;
•Undertake other necessary tasks as instructed by the Principal Investigator.

The National Centre for Computer Animation
The National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) at Bournemouth University is a Centre of Excellence for Computer Animation. The aim of the Centre is to encourage and foster research and innovation in the applications of Computer Animation techniques. The NCCA is staffed by an interdisciplinary team of technologists, computer scientists, artists and media professionals who collaborate in the teaching, research and production of Computer Animation. The Computer Animation Research Centre is the research arm of the NCCA.
The NCCA has provided a unique opportunity to establish a supportive infrastructure for academic study, research and consultancy projects. This has resulted in a stimulating and challenging environment where Masters students work alongside a growing number of PhD research students, and with academic staff undertaking personal research and consultancy projects.
Since 1989, the NCCA has pioneered the teaching of Computer Animation at undergraduate and postgraduate level and leads the UK in providing highly-qualified graduates for the digital media sectors. The NCCA currently runs a BA and a number of MA / MSc courses in Computer Animation and Digital Special Effects.
The NCCA was awarded a 5 in the last RAE, thus achieving the highest grade in computer animation research in the UK. It was also voted the number 1 by the influential magazine 3D World

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Computer AnimationRef: MED267
£20,723 - £31,300 per annum
The National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) within the Bournemouth Media School was rated 5 in the last RAE and was voted the number 1 for computer animation education in the UK by 3D World Magazine.
The NCCA is now seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to undertake an EPSRC-funded project. The aim of the project is to develop algorithms and software to animate realistic virtual humans in real time. The developed techniques will have a wide range of applications in virtual environments and computer games. This project is part of a joint investigation with University College London and the University of Lancaster.
With a PhD in a computing related discipline, you will have good knowledge and experience of computer graphics, a strong background in mathematics, proficiency in C/C++ programming and good experience of algorithm design. Knowledge and experience of character animation, facial animation, computer games development, virtual environment and real-time systems development are desirable.
This post is available on a 3 year fixed term contract.
