Digital Earth - The New Collaborative Earth Model

Organizing the World’s Energy Data


Digital Earth is building a world-class data, information and community platform for the International energy industry. This industry represents 3 to 5% of the global economy but is still relatively untouched by already proven Web 2.0 search and collaboration technologies. Your challenge, as a Digital Earth employee, will be to deal with the huge amounts of industry data stored with academic institutions, government organizations, commercial data vendors and national data repositories while at the same time building algorithms and data intelligence to crawl, categorize and geospatially categorize the unstructured web of information on the internet (as well as proprietary intranet networks). This combination of structured energy data, vertical-specific internet search, and user-generated content will become the definitive repository of energy sector information.

Company: Digital Earth Inc. is an International (Cayman Islands-based) company founded by experienced professionals from the Energy Information and Internet industries. The company’s initial operational base will be in Shenzhen (where the Chairman and CFO are already based). Specific roles we are looking to fill at this time are:


SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT ROLES
Senior Software Engineer (1 position)
. Advanced system architect and standard setting software development skills
. Advanced knowledge in performance, scalability, enterprise system architecture and engineering best practices
. Capable of full system design, including requirements gathering, specifications and coding
. Involved in scoping the technical requirements for a new projects, identifying appropriate technology solutions for each project
. Work directly with technology leaders to make sure that the pieces of the complex system work well with components
. Work requires significant creativity and judgment
. Knowledge of geographical and geospatial systems and databases will be needed
. B.S/M.S/PhD degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics.
. 5-10 years of relevant and broad experience
Software Engineer (2 – 3 positions)
. Have strong experience in Computer Science principles such as OOD, Distributed Systems, Algorithms, Search and Information Retrieval and Operating Systems
. Experience in writing well documented code in object oriented language such as Java
. Two (2) plus years of software engineering and product development experience
. Development experience with Java in combination with web-technologies (e.g. servlets, JSP, JNDI, EJB, JDBC, security etc)
. Familiarity with open-source technologies like GIS, web-crawling, scraping, search and index, geo-spatial web would be a big plus
. B.S/M.S/PhD degree in Computer Science of related fields, or equivalent experience

Technical Skill Sets Illustration
We are currently writing product and system specifications so do not, at this stage, wish to be too prescriptive about specific technical skills. The afore-mentioned emphasis on core engineering strengths and personality are of most importance to us since people with these attributes will easily be able to adapt to technologies that are new to them. The following is an indication of what we seek and we would like to profile candidates strengths in these areas.
. Full software-development life-cycle experience (inception, requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment)
. Java (and maybe C++) in combination with web-technologies (e.g. servlets, JSP, JNDI, EJB, JDBC, security etc)
• Open-source technologies (web-crawling, scraping, search and index, geo-spatial web, shopping, load-balancing etc)
. Design in UML
. XML, HTML, RDF, RSS 1.0, Atom etc.
. Relational databases (e.g. MySQL)
. Unix, Linux, Microsoft platforms (with basic administrative knowledge)
. Software testing methods
. Software development methods and processes



MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES


Head of Geosciences (1 position)

As Digital Earth’s Chief Geoscientist you will have a varied and critical role including:

. Supervising the hiring, training, and management of Digital Earth’s content development staff in their quest to index, catalogue and categorize the World’s energy data and expertise.
. Liaise with the software development staff to ensure that the company’s data management and web deliver tools remain fit for purpose and relevant to the geoscience community.
. As appropriate, accompany other company executives to conferences and client meetings to help further refine product requirements and assist in sales.

The minimum requirements for this job are:

. Three (3) plus years experience in a geological and / or geophysical role in either a leading Oil company or International oil service company.
. Knowledge / experience in dealing with oil and gas industry data and data formatting related issues and / or data scouting preferred.
. Line management experience, especially supervisory experience in the geotechnical / data management realm is also highly desirable.
. Earth Sciences Degree. Bachelor Degree as a minimum, Masters or above preferred.
. Given the need to understand the needs of our International Clients (and project credibility on the same issues) preference will be given to candidates with International experience and contacts (in terms of education, work experience, professional affiliations and reputation).
. Fluency in English and Chinese required.
. Must be willing to locate to Shenzhen and be available for occasional International travel.


OPERATIONAL ROLES

Energy Data / Content Development Staff (3+ positions)

. Meticulous and conscientious staff for cleanup, indexing and value-adding International Energy-relevant databases.
. Knowledge or background with Energy relevant-data (e.g. Geology) is useful but not essential.
. Good command of written and spoken English required.
. Recent University grads preferred unless interim work experience is energy or earth science related.
