Level 2 Support Engineer Job Overview
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This position is responsible for creating and/or maintaining software applications for a product or family of products. Provides moderately complex modification, testing and debugging tasks. Provides analysis related to software design and development and solves problems. Evaluates impact of software performance, and recommends changes to software designers. This position works with minimal supervision and utilizes knowledge, experience and judgment to accomplish goals.

Key Responsibilities
 Design and code moderately complex units/modules/products that meet functional and business requirements on schedule and within budget.
 Develop plans outlining steps and time tables for developing programs and communicate plans and status to management and other development team members.
 Write and maintain documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
 Perform unit/module testing of software to find errors and confirm programs meet specifications.
 Fix bugs, add enhancements, and convert software to other platforms.
 Set up software configuration control and software development environments including program source control to ensure reliable backups and source code integrity.
 Participate in design and code reviews with other developers.
 Assist Quality Assurance Team by providing assistance to testers and support personnel as needed to determine system problems.
 Develop and direct software testing plans for quality assurance.
 Attend department meetings and provide input to establish and improve departmental processes and procedures.
 Provide product content to Technical Writers.
 Research perceived problem situations.
 Create STAR Issue, Solution, and Problem elements and maintaining them in a manner which meets CA corporate, departmental, and individual goals.
 Communicate with customers in a timely manner, either electronically or verbally, when dealing with their issues.
 Design, write and test code fixes with minimal direction from more senior software engineers or management.
 Package, test and stage individual code fixes and Service Packs for distribution.
 Create Informational Solutions or Product Information Bulletins for problems that do not require a code level fix.
 Communicate Level 2 Software Engineering changes to Technical Support, Technical Publications, Development, and Quality Assurance to ensure product code changes are understood and documented clearly.
 Manage change control for product source code.
 Maintain, build and test environments.
 Perform compatibility testing of products on new operating systems, hardware, and software.
Work Experience
Typically 3 to 5 years in software development, Level 2 Support or related field.

Position-Specific Education, Experience and Certifications

Preferred Education

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related discipline. Masters Degree a plus.
Work Experience

Typically has 3 to 5 years of experience (1 to 3 years with a Masters Degree) in software development, Level 2 Support or a related field.

Job Description
This position is responsible for running and building tests that ensure the quality of his/her assigned products within the scope of his/her training and expertise.

Key Responsibilities
 Develop test plans.
 Set-up testing environments.
 Perform test cases and maintain associated test records.
 Develop and utilize automated test scripts to perform duties
 Record issues into a defect-tracking system.
 Follow-up and close issues entered into the defect-tracking system.
 Escalate issues to a higher level where issue resolution is not achieved within a reasonable amount of time.
 Provide information to technical documentation (i.e. Product Release Notes/Readme files).
 Review product documentation (manuals/Getting Started Guides) for technical accuracy.
 Work with development team to understand assigned modules/new product features for the purpose of developing test cases.

Job Requirement
• BS/MS Degree in Computer Science or related field.
• Typically 3 to 5 years in a related role.
• Ability to follow and report exactly as described in test cases/procedures.
• Ability to determine sufficiency of test cases/procedures to ensure high product quality.
• Ability to write test cases/procedures to an approved specification.
• Excellent trouble shooting skills.
• Computer operating system, appropriate subsystems and test tool knowledge.
• Demonstrates an understanding of coding languages.
• Has an understanding of multiple hardware and OS platforms.
• Has experienced UNIX Server, database or application server administration a plus.
• Ability to develop and maintain automation scrip.
