Political Section
Position: Assistant Desk Officer
Position Open to: Qualified Chinese Nationals and British Nationals with a valid “W” or “Z” visa.
Main purpose of the job:
To help deliver the UK’s objectives in China by analysing developments in Chinese foreign policy and helping UK officials to engage with their Chinese counterparts. You will work closely with other parts of the Embassy and partners across Government in several key policy areas, including China’s role in conflict resolution in Africa, UN reform, China’s relations with other Asian countries and counter-proliferation.
Main responsibilities:
This is a key position in the Political Section of the British Embassy Beijing working directly to the Head of the China Foreign Policy Team. This person will be the principal research officer for this team and will be responsible for following developments in Chinese foreign policy and writing reports in English for the Embassy and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Specific responsibilities include:
Contact building with key institutions
Day-today monitoring of core media sources, alerting desk officers to significant developments
Researching and reporting Chinese relations with foreign countries and multilateral organisations
Researching and reporting senior leadership appointments, speeches, major conferences and policy initiatives, political reform/governance issues
Reporting visits of Chinese and foreign leaders
Administrative support for working level visits related to foreign policy
Key requirements:
High levels of initiative, motivation, drive and commitment
A very high standard of written English (all reporting is in English)
Excellent research and drafting skills
Fluency in Mandarin Chinese
Knowledge of Chinese foreign policy would be an asset
Good administrative and IT skills
Other requirements:
Obtain evidence of a non-criminal record
May be required to attend some events out of conditioned hours

General conditions:
The starting gross salary is RMB 8,357 per month. The successful candidate will be employed under locally employed staff conditions within the British Embassy Beijing. Conditioned working hours is 35 hours/week from Monday to Friday.
