Semiotician:
This position should be with an academic background in chinese cultural studies/media studies/critical theory/literary theory(English or Modern Languages). Brand fanatic has strong opinions about the role that brands play in culture, is passionate about their mythical function/iconic status, can articulate how great brands are an expression of culture"s desires and anxieties and has a theory about how this might work. This position mad passionate about what"s going on in this fickle fast changing world ours, fascinated by fasion, motivated by music, transfixed by technology, etc, and always has strong opinions on what this means about how culture"s changing and has lots of interesting friends. This position has a compulsive deconstructor natural ability and nosiness that means they are constantly breaking things down into their composite units of meaning - a designer/ ad creative.
Responsibilities:
The Semiotician will use clever stuff only when it"s really useful, he has academic clout, he can back up/rationalise "new" marketing thing with an "old" strong and respected schools of thought and analysis. He can help us develop and sell a "culture strategy" component to the brand work we do, champions the value of understanding the less tangible iconic, culture elements of brands, champions the value for brands of tapping into "culture phenomenon" and has ideas on how we can do this. This position can recruit brilliant experts, see trends before they hit tipping point, impress clients by being "cool". This position is seen by clients and internally as a "new perspective" who "thinks differently".
The Semiotician is not about creating a "new" methodology to be used round the business but creating a bespoke team of people (internal/ freelance and expert) who solve brand problems by going down avenues that consumers and brand strategists wouldn"t because of their unique understanding of and connection with culture.
