Yahoo! China R&D Center in Beijing is fully owned and operated by United States based Yahoo! Inc.  The Sponsored Search team at the Center is looking for a senior software engineer. You will be working on next generation matching and serving infrastructure, as well as supporting new functionalities on the existing platform, implementing features and architecture improvements to impact the bottom-line. Our goal is to improve ad relevance via extracting matching features from ad content (title, description, landing page), external content (anchor-text, webmap), user attributes (geo, behavioral, demo) etc. 

Current matching and serving infrastructure serves hundreds of millions of queries, crawls/indexes terabytes of data and handles millions of message based updates on a daily basis. It has all the characteristics of large-scale high performance geographically distributed systems. Developing for this infrastructure presents many technical challenges in the areas of query processing, caching, high throughput systems, large-scale data processing and clustering techniques. 

Key Responsibilities

The candidate should be able to comprehend existing systems, propose/implement recommendations for improving overall design, scalability and modularity of the system, as well as carry over learnings in building our next generation systems without compromising the functional capabilities.  The initial focus of the position will be on supporting Yahoo! Japan but will be expanded to the global Sponsored Search product.
 
Minimum Requirements
§         BS or MS in Computer Science or a related field, academic knowledge of Computer Science (algorithms, data structures etc) 
§         Solid experience in C/C++ with some scripting background
§         Solid object-oriented design / programming experience
§         Experience with Unix tools and utilities
§         Understanding of networks, TCP/UDP protocols with a systems programming background
§         Experience in the area of multi-process/thread application, scalable architecture, performance analysis and tuning
§         Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Able to make engineering assessment to fill in the gaps
§         Experience with full life cycle (design, implementation, testing, releasing and sustaining) of a large project
§         Strong teamwork skills
§         Fluent oral English communication, precise written communication in Chinese and English.
 
Preferred Job Qualifications
§         Experience with Information Retrieval systems
§         Experience with Grid computing
§         Fluent in Japanese
