                                       The Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning
 
Assistant Professor, International Planning with Expertise in China
The Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning in the College of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in China beginning Fall 2011. Candidates must have an earned doctorate (or be in the final stages of their degree) in economics, geography, public policy, public health, urban and regional planning, urban studies, or a related discipline. While we are open to considering a range of substantive areas of expertise, the areas of community development, environmental management, urban design, and urban health are considered priorities.
This position was created to strengthen the School's capacity in comparative international urban studies and planning scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the undergraduate and graduate programs of the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning (ww***edu[点击查看]), participate in ongoing and emerging interdisciplinary research opportunities on campus, and further develop existing student, faculty and professional exchanges with research and planning organizations in China. PSU faculty members are expected to develop a strong record of scholarship and civic engagement, pursue externally-funded research, and participate in university, departmental and community service.
The Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning offers 4 degree programs: 1) an undergraduate major in Community Development (one of the only such programs in the United States) 2) a professional Master of Urban and Regional Planning, 3) a Master of Urban Studies, and 4) a PhD in Urban Studies. Additionally, the school awards professionally-oriented graduate certificates in Urban Design, Real Estate Development, and Transportation. In the Fall 2011, the Toulan School will offer a Master of Real Estate Development in collaboration with the PSU School of Business. Research units in the Toulan School include the Center for Urban Studies and the Center for Transportation Studies, as well as the closely affiliated Population Research Center and Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies.
The College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) is one of seven major academic units at PSU and is comprised of three units: the Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning, the School of Community Health and the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government. In total, the College of Urban and Public Affairs has more than 70 full-time faculty members. Collaborative efforts across schools are encouraged. PSU is located in beautiful downtown Portland, Oregon. The City of Portland is a nationally recognized center for innovation in land use and transportation planning, community governance, and sustainability.
The starting annual salary for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The excellent benefits package includes fully paid healthcare; employer-paid retirement contributions; and significantly reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependents at any of the Oregon University System schools.
