The Institute for Theoretical Computer Science (ITCS) is headed by Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, A. M. Turing Award laureate at Tsinghua University. Its mission is to nurture and develop the talents of students and researchers as well as to develop knowledge for the advancement of computer science. It aims to become one of the leading research centers on theoretical computer science in the world. The Institute already has an elite graduate student body and enjoys frequent visits by world-renowned scientists all year round. With a vibrant research environment and impressive research outputs, ITCS provides an ideal setting for fruitful interactions and collaborations among its members.

Led by Prof. Yao, ITCS has built up an international faculty team which consists of: (1) 2 professors, 1 associate professor and 5 assistant professors (4 of them are foreign citizens); (2) excellent PhD graduates from prestigious universities worldwide each year to conduct postdoctoral research in China; (3) famous long-term visiting professors giving lectures at ITCS; (4) senior adjunct faculty from world-renowned institutions such as MSRA; and (5) a theoretical computer science chair professor team composed of the best computer scientists in the world such as Prof. Sanjeev Arora and Prof. Bernard Chazelle from Princeton University, Prof. Sanjeev Khanna from the University of Pennsylvania, and Prof. Silvio Micali from MIT.

By July 2010, Tsinghua University Special Pilot CS Class (Yao Class) has provided educational and research training to more than 170 students. Among the 81 graduates, 96% have chosen to pursue further study at such prestigious universities as Princeton, MIT and Stanford. ITCS has conferred doctorates on 17 students, who are pursuing their academic career at top research institutions and corporations.

In 2009, Professor Yao unveiled the ambitious “China Computer Science 2020 Plan”, which proposes that ITCS be developed into a medium-sized computer science institute not only for theory but also for the field of computer science in general. The Plan would cover a substantial part of the computer science field and aim to achieve academic excellence competitive with the top ten computer science departments in the world. It would also aim to help make China competitive in future IT innovation. In Professor Yao’s vision, these efforts would involve nurturing innovative students and other talented individuals at all levels, creating high-end intellectual research by faculty members, and promoting the transfer of technology. According to the Plan, the current research scope of ITCS would expand to ten areas by 2020, the size of the faculty would increase to sixty members, and the number of PhD students would reach up to 240.
