Insects have been on this planet for 400 million years. They live everywhere - in your garden, in the rainforests, and even in deserts.Ten years ago there were approximately 750,000 named insect species. Today, that number is over 1,000,000. Insects perform a vast number of important functions in our ecosystem. They aerate the soil, pollinate blossoms, and control insect and plant pests; they also decompose dead materials, thereby reintroducing nutrients into the soil. Burrowing bugs such as ants and beetles dig tunnels that provide channels for water, benefiting plants. Bees play a major role in pollinating fruit trees and flower blossoms. But now around the world, honeybee stocks are in decline, which scientists have warned could have devastating impacts on global food supplies. A total of 80 percent of world food crops are primarily or exclusively pollinated by honeybees, amounting to 130 crops and $15 billion worth of food each year in the United States alone. Using the insect models to discover the effects of the chemicals may help us to early warning and produce our natural ecosystems.
We perform several standard insect tests. Examples include acute oral toxicity testing on honeybee, acute contact toxicity testing on honeybee, etc.

Aquatic organisms are suitable models for testing the effects of chemicals on acute and chronic effects.
A wide variety of organisms utilize the aquatic environments. They range in size from microscopic protzoa to the enormous sperm whale. Many aquatic organisms spend their entire lives in water, either in freshwater streams, rivers, and lakes, or in marine or estuarine habitats. Other aquatic organisms only spend part of their lives in water.
With the rapid growth of the industry, the pollution caused by chemicals becomes more and more serious. We know that pollution causes not only physical disabilities, psychological and behavioral disorders in people but also in organisms from aquatic ecosystems. Water polluted by chemicals (such as pesticides, hydrocarbons, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals etc) may have uncertain and potential effects on the aquatic organisms. Using the aquatic organisms’ models to discover the effects may help us to early warning and take action to protect our environment.
We perform several standard aquatic tests in alga, daphnia and fish. Examples include short term toxicity testing on daphnia, growth inhibition study on algae, acute toxicity test on fish, etc.

When a chemical is released into the environment many things happen to it. Some actions are beneficial. For example, the leaching of some herbicides into the root zone can give better weed control. However, releasing pesticides into the environment can also be harmful, as not the entire applied chemical reaches the target site. For example, runoff can move the herbicide away from target weeds. The chemical is wasted, weed control is reduced, and there is more chance of damaging other plants and polluting soil and water. Or some of the pesticide may drift downwind and outside of the intended application site. Many processes affect what happens to chemicals in the environment. These processes include adsorption, transfer, breakdown and degradation. Transfer includes processes that move the pesticide away from the target site. These include volatilization, spray drift, runoff, leaching, absorption and crop removal. Many chemicals have the potential to cause harm to the environment if they are not used safely, minimizing the potential for environmental issues by following label directions, storing pesticides safely, and using them properly. In order to determine the extent of environmental exposure to a chemical, it is necessary to evaluate that chemical’s environmental fate. While the amount and frequency of a chemical’s release, as well as the environmental medium - air, water, or soil - into which it’s released are important considerations, environmental fate is determined by what happens after the chemical has been released into the environment.
Performs several standard tests in environmental fate. Examples include ready biodegradation, soil simulation testing, sediment simulation testing, abiotic degradation, identification of degradation, etc.

Terrestrial organisms are suitable models for testing the effects of chemicals on acute and chronic effects.
The Earth hosts more than 400,000 documented species of terrestrial life. In turn, our planet depends upon these organisms to nurture and sustain all living creatures. They play a critical role in the complex food web. Powered by light from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and nutrients from the soil, organisms pass on this energy to the life forms that consume them. And for many species, terrestrial organisms keep the balance of the earth; make the energy circle; bring aesthetic pleasure, delighting the senses with their beauty and variety.
With the rapid growth of the industry, the pollution caused by chemicals becomes more and more serious. We know that pollution causes not only physical disabilities, psychological and behavioral disorders in people but also in organisms from terrestrial ecosystems. Birds are suitable models for testing the effects of chemicals on acute and reproduction effects. Birds are a visible and important part of the world we share. There are around 10,000 living species, making them the most varied of tetrapod vertebrates. They inhabit ecosystems across the globe. Many species undertake long distance annual migrations, and many more perform shorter irregular movements. But about 120–130 species have become extinct as a result of human activity since the 17th century, and hundreds more before then. Currently about 1,200 species of birds are threatened with extinction by human activities, though efforts are underway to protect them. They are not only worthy of protection in themselves, but are also environmental sentinels, forewarning us of potential hazards to our environment and our own health. They are particularly sensitive to many pesticides. For example birds are 100 times more sensitive than mammals to the commonly used insecticide diazinon. Populations may already be in decline due to other factors, such as habitat loss due to agriculture, urban development and invasive species. A decline in some other bird species, such as Peregrine Falcons, brought about by DDT and other pesticides have been produced with serious effects also for other species of wildlife and for humans. Using the bird models to discover the effects of chemicals on the environment may help us to early warning and in order to take action to protect them. We perform several standard avian tests. Insects are suitable models for testing the effects of chemicals on reproduction and mutagenicity. For the testing of genotoxic effects in insects there are only a few species for which the genetics are well known. For Drosophila melanogaster (and some other species of this genus) the genome is known in detail. The candidate will detect effects such as dominant lethal mutation, chromosome loss, deletions, translocations, nondysfunctions, and recombination in this species, which due to short generation time, numerous progeny, few chromosomes, and numerous diverse markers is relatively simple. We perform several standard mutagenicity tests in Drosophila. Examples include sex-linked recessive lethal test, translocation assay, aneuploidy test, or urine-spot test.
