Trainee Software Engineer
Mainframe Services (MFS) / Middleware Technology Services (MTS), HSBC Technology and Services Asia Pacific (HTSA)

HSBC Technology and Services Asia Pacific (HTSA) is a shared services organization in HSBC whose goal is to provide industry-leading technology infrastructure, systems, support and operations for HSBC financial services in the Asia Pacific region. The service and scope of HTSA cover 20 areas (Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Hong Kong, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam), including, in particular, the operation of the flagship TKO data centre (located in Hong Kong) - the regional HUB for Asia Pacific.
Both Mainframe Services (MFS) and Middleware Technology Services (MTS) are units operating under IT Operations in HTSA whose goal is to deliver excellent technology support and consulting services on mainframe in support of HSBC banking applications for the customers at superb price point. The functions of MFS / MTS cover:
- the technical planning, exploitation and implementation of mainframe technologies and functions to meet application and business requirements
- the capacity planning of mainframe system resources to reduce costs and optimize investments
- the consumption monitoring of mainframe system resources to fully recover and optimize costs
- the installation and implementation of MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) mainframe operating system and related mainframe system software / middleware including CICS, MQ and DB2
- the setup and maintenance of MVS logical partitions and CF (Coupling Facility) partitions for development activities and production workload
- the installation and upgrade of mainframe hardware such as processors
- the monitoring and tuning of mainframe system / middleware performance
- the provision of technical support, technology advice and solution on mainframe to other IT and Bank departments
- the management and resolution of mainframe hardware, MVS and related mainframe system software / middleware problems
Job Descriptions
The successful applicant will be involved in one or more of the following:
- perform capacity planning of mainframe system resources
- monitor the consumption of mainframe system resources and cost recovery
- manage, monitor and perform tuning of mainframe system / middleware performance
- evergreen and re-engineer the approach, method and process of mainframe capacity planning, monitoring and reporting for mainframe resource consumption and mainframe system / middleware performance for continued improvement on service quality and operational efficiency
- provide proactive consultancy, advice and technical support to other IT and Bank departments on mainframe resource consumption and mainframe system / middleware performance
- perform other MVS systems programming tasks such as maintaining MVS operating system, related system software / middleware, and MVS / CF partitions
- evergreen and re-engineer the approach, method and process of mainframe system / middleware maintenance for continued improvement on service quality and operational efficiency
- work collaboratively with other teams in other IT or Bank departments, whether local or in other regions
- investigate and resolve mainframe hardware, MVS and related system software / middleware problems and errors
Job Requirements
The successful applicant should:
- be a university graduate with a relevant IT degree at bachelor or master level
- be eager to learn and take up mainframe systems programming tasks
- be able to learn and master new features / components of MVS and new system software / middleware fast
- possess a can-do and above the line attitude, and can work independently
- possess good analytical skills, be innovative and proactive in generating solutions, meticulous and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines
- be able to work occasionally during out of office hours, including weekend days and nights
- possess good communication skills, presentation skills, influencing skills and be able to work with teams in other regions with different cultures
- be able to build and maintain relationships at all levels
