1.0 JOB DESCRIPTION
The Staff Systems Design Engineer will lead efforts to architect, design, specify and verify complex scientific instruments and subsystems. A well-rounded generalist rather than a specialist is needed, with a broad understanding of complex optical, mechanical, software-driven electrical systems, such as in an experimental physics environment. In this position, architectural thinking is essential, and designing the system in clearly defined modules with well controlled interfaces must come as second nature.
This is a hands-on position, with a large amount of team interaction in a laboratory setting.
1.1 Provide technical direction and leadership to a cross-functional product development team in system architecture and design.
1.2 Work with Marketing and Engineering to define, analyze, detail, and document specifications for tradeoffs, performance, features, controls, and operation of products into a form suitable for product implementation.
1.3 Contribute to the designs as required; this may include development, verification and validation of algorithms.
1.4 Lead system integration of the specialist areas of a product.
1.5 Define product requirements specifications in the cross-functional team environment.
1.6 Plan and conduct in-depth reviews, testing and verifications/validation of product features.
1.7 Critically analyze and verify system performance through simulation, test, and measurements.
1.8 Specify and develop improvements or enhancements to existing products and champion implementation if necessary.
1.9 Documentation of requirements and traceability matrices need to be maintained for regulatory purposes in the environment of a diagnostic, medical device manufacturer.
1.10 Manage medium to large sized projects without supervision.
1.11 Mentor junior team members as required.
1.12 Other duties as needed.
2.0 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
2.1 A Ph.D. in Physics, Optics, or similar engineering disciplines with five or more (5 ) years of industry experience OR MS in the same areas with eight or more (8 ) years of industry experience.
2.2 The candidate should demonstrate a high skill set not just in one specialty, such as Optics, but also in other functional areas, such as Electronics or Mechanics. Cross-functional thinking and skills are essential.
2.3 Must have a proven record of performing troubleshooting on complex instrumentation, such as optical, electrical, mechanical, and software components.
2.4 Cross-functional thinking and skills in consensus building among various functions are essential.
2.5 A profound understanding of optical systems, optoelectronics, opto-mechanical and software driven hardware is necessary. First order optical layouts should be readily understood, and in-depth knowledge of basic optics calculations (geometrical as well as Gaussian optics) is required. Experience in lens design is advantageous.
2.6 Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
2.7 Ability to adapt quickly to change and work in a rapidly changing environment.
2.8 Knowledge of or prior work experience in one or more of the following subject areas would be helpful: medical electronic instruments, ophthalmic instruments, imaging or non-imaging optics, image processing, machine vision systems, human vision, modeling and simulation tools (MATLAB, Labview, MathCad/Mathematica/Maple).
2.9 Hands-on experience in the laboratory set-up, testing and the definition of system-level requirements and design of experiments is essential.
2.10 Strong ability to work with Marketing and with other engineering groups in resolving design trade-offs.
2.11 Experienced with design in product development projects and design control processes. Familiar with ISO 9001, ISO 13485, IEC 60601. Candidates with a mechanical designer background should be experienced in Pro-E and have knowledge about other 3-D CAD systems (Autocad & Solidworks).
