Job title: System Engineer
Organizational unit: Philips Lighting
Location: Shanghai , PRC
1. Job definition
The job function has a strong emphasis on LED-related competences (thermal, optical performance, electronics control) in a synergetic manner. Key in SSL projects is to find the right balance between the thermal, optical, mechanical, and electronics solution. This means the jobholders will be working with the team in OEM/ODM projects as a technical “front-person”. Supply base is located in mainland China , and requires frequent communication and visits to ensure quality, reliability, and timeliness.
Key areas of Responsibilities LED engine system
– Responsible for “catalog” LEDs and/or “second of kind” LED Engine release, different focus than Roger Hoskens’ department (“first of kind” LED Engine release)
– LED Engine requirement definition and selection for LED modules applications
– Build up LED based system modeling to support modules & systems performance estimation and verification/measurement
– Module system architecture
– Core is LED Engine selection/ definition, key links of the systems are the light, electricity, and heat flows.
– The system engineer/architect shall take the leading role together with Technical Project Leader in define and validate the new platform system architecture, , esp. during the feasibility (pre-MS0) stage
– The system engineer/architect shall focus on the total module system design and optimization (top performance, lowest cost price, and world class reliability)
– SSL retrofit system competence
– Actively participate and contribute to the System Competence team and LED Architect Competence team
– Scout, benchmark and bring new/emerging technology into our product design in order to improve the performance, lower the cost, and realize never-possible features
– Being an active member in the SSL system engineer/architect network within Philips to leverage knowledge (GBU LED Lamps, LightLabs, Consumer Luminiare, Prof. Luminaire, and etc.)
Areas of responsibility in General
· Bring LED expertise (interaction with electronics, test, thermal, and reliability) to a higher level in the team, by “training on the job”.
· Links the various disciplines together in the form of design rules, and brings awareness to the team of the balancing act between optical, electronics, thermal, and mechanics. Takes design decisions in a timely and appropriate manner.
· Keeps abreast of technical developments in own field through study of the literature and technical contacts.
· Act as a linking pin between predevelopment and the product development team in Shanghai , ensuring efficient transfer of projects from concept to market.
· Serve a role model of taking ownership of technical and operational issues, and create a team spirit in these by smart delegating of tasks.
2. Required experience and level of expertise
The ideal candidate has a broad technical back-ground in the field of (digital) electronics, LED/Laser physics, material properties, and has demonstrated a great drive for getting things done, on-time. The candidate should be familiar with optical, electrical, and thermo-mechanical issues that are relevant to ensure quality and reliability of LED Lighting products.
The candidate holds an MSc/PhD in the area of opto-electronics (applied physics of compound semiconductors or electrical engineering), and has >3 years of experience in both developing and manufacturing LED Lighting products.
Good command of the English language in both speaking and writing is a must.
