ABS Greater China Division - Operational & Environmental Performance Center Engineer Specialist/Senior Engineer
The position we are seeking is an Engineering Specialist/Senior Engineer for the Greater China Division (GCD) Operational & Environmental Performance (OEP) Center. This position reports to the Principal Engineer of the GCD OEP Center based in Shanghai. While the position requires knowledge and skills of a wide spectrum of disciplines spanning naval architecture and marine engineering, the person we are seeking is one who has significant experience in basic ship design. Two position specializations are available (1 position each)
- Specialization in basic design for naval architecture
Specialization in basic design engineering for systems
Principal Duties The Engineering Specialist/Senior Engineer will carry out tasks on specific projects and work activities relating to ship design evaluation and assessments. Duties may include:
- Perform energy efficiency related services including system performance evaluation, advanced analyses and technical reports in support of clients
- Provide technically sound advice to ship owners, designers and yards on issues for specific ship types, including container ships, tankers and bulk carriers.
- Perform design evaluation of all major and ancillary machinery systems in overall fuel efficient design assessment methodology (Engineering Systems).
- Perform development of ship concept designs and concept arrangement for engineering systems e.g. LNG fueled vessels (Engineering Systems)
- Provide technically sound advice to ship owners, designers and yards on compliance strategies for IMO environmental regulations e.g. SOx, NOx, and CO2 emissions, and ballast water management. (Engineering Systems)
- Manage scope of work definition for CFD services with clients, interface with the CFD Team during project execution and present results to clients with the assistance of the CFD team. (Naval Architecture)
- Deliver Applied Technology services in support of achieving clients' EEDI goals. (Naval Architecture)
- Support witnessing of model tests, full scale speed trials and EEDI calculations. (Naval Architecture)
- Support the service delivery of Techno-Economic analysis services
- Identify client needs and participate in the development of product/service specifications for development.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required (KSAR)
- MSc or PhD degree in naval architecture, marine engineering or related discipline
- Ability to work unsupervised and as part as a team
• Good oral and written communication skills - Mandarin Chinese & English
Experience A combination of some or all of the following:
- Minimum of eight (8) years of related engineering experience in a recognized research university, research institute, shipyard, or design/consulting office.
- Significant working experience in an initial/basic design leadership role
- Ship design with emphasis on fuel efficiency (hull and machinery systems)
- Desirable - R&D related to fundamental or applied hydrodynamics in ship propulsion and ship dynamics
- Desirable - CFD applications and/or model testing experience
