Senior Research Engineer: Thermal & Power Team

 

Job Requirements:

     Provide expertise in heat transfer, thermodynamics and thermal management systems analysis.

     Identify and develop new opportunities with UTC business units focused on new technology validation and product development.

     Provide innovative solutions to building thermal management systems, HVAC&R, Combined Heat and Power (CHP), emerging cooling technologies and renewable energy applications.

Activities may include creation and development of thermal management concepts, thermodynamic cycle analysis, and preliminary system and component design.

 

Minimum Qualifications Required:

     MS or PhD degree in mechanical with 3-6 years experience.

     Fluent English (both written and spoken) and excellent communication skills.

     Heat transfer and thermodynamic cycle analytical skills.

     Experience with vapor-compression or power generation cycles and systems including related components: heat exchangers and compression technologies.

 

Preferred Candidates will possess the following:

     MS or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years of professional experience.

     Expertise in model development software tools like Dymola, Matlab/Simulink.

     Experience in HVAC&R, building energy analysis, and systems engineering a plus.

     Research experience in advanced thermal management technologies.

Research Engineer: Fuel Cell System Modeling

 

Job Requirements:

     Perform innovative research and development (R&D) in a multidisciplinary area of fuel cell systems.

     Develop system level steady-state and dynamic models including electrochemical devices, mechanical devices, and chemical reactors.  

     Analyze complex interacting systems and demonstrate rigorous understanding of the interplay of various subsystems.

 

Computational Fluid Dynamics: Applied HVAC Systems In Buildings

 

Job Requirements:

 

     Participate in multi-disciplinary teams on projects related to building system airflow and thermal modeling and fluid dynamics in HVAC&R systems.

     Application of CFD to practical problems and an ability to develop innovative solutions based on the calculations.

     Create new technical and project opportunities through technology leveraging, strategic partnering, and acquisition of external contracts

     Provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations

 

 

Preferred Candidates will possess the following:

 

     MS or PhD. in mechanical/aerospace engineering

     0-5 years experience in applied Computational Fluid Dynamics or closely related field

     Expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics applied to HVAC systems

     Experience in HVAC thermal system modeling

     Fluent English (both written and spoken) and excellent communication skills

     Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams in both China and USA

Research Engineer: Mechanical Design

Job Requirements:

       • Interpret drawings, specifications, and standards in an expert manner to ensure that high quality and safe products are produced.

   Synthesize various multi-disciplinary requirements and transform them into cost effective system/component design solutions.

   Apply 3D Finite Element Analysis pre and post data processing software applications, evaluates structural behavior, correlates with test results and recommends component design improvements.

   Identify and develop new opportunities with UTC business units focused on new technology validation and product development.

       • Work with outside vendors to develop innovative turbo-machinery. Activities may include creation and development of turbo-machinery concepts (system and/or components), preliminary system and component design, and prototyping.

 

Minimum Qualifications Required:

       • Fluent English (both written and spoken) and excellent communication skills.

       • Demonstrated mechanical design skills.

       • Be cognizant of current manufacturing practices and techniques and understand how their relative merits affect cost.

Principal Investigator – Integrated Building Energy Modeling and Analysis

United Technologies Research Center China (UTRCC) is looking for a principal investigator to lead activities related to system- and component-level building energy model development and green building design.  In this role, this person will: 1) Lead a team of engineers and scientists in the successful execution of projects in this area;  2) Interact with the UTRC East Hartford Programs and Departments as well as the Carrier Lead Design Center in Shanghai;   3) Mentor individual contributors; assure technical discipline and rigor, and assist in developing technical skills in selected areas;  4) Demonstrate excellent communication skills and be able to provide timely, accurate and detailed reports and presentations to management and functional teams; and 5) Leverage and grow strategic partnerships with leading University researchers in China.

Job Requirements:

The preferred candidate must have at least 3 years of experience of academic or professional experience in the areas of modeling and analysis pertinent to building envelope and cooling and heating equipment. The candidate should have a strong technical background in the fundamentals of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer required to simulate building energy systems. The ability to represent physics in the form of dynamic models that can be used to carry out analysis and control of building systems is required. The candidate should also be well motivated and fast learner and must have excellent technical leadership, communications, teamwork, customer focus, and focus on results.

Preferred qualifications:

- Candidates with prior experience in leading teams would receive strong consideration. 

- Experience with physics based modeling of hydronic, VRF, Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or other combined HVAC, refrigeration and power systems in commonly available tools such as DOE-2 and EnergyPlus.

-  Functional expertise in Matlab and object oriented programming.

-  Familiarity with controls analysis and the use of Simulink.

- Familiarity with LEED building design and certification.

- Familiarity with Cooling, Heating and Power (CHP) equipment, energy storage and active cooling devices in buildings.  

Education:

A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Building Sciences, Architecture or other related engineering field.
