Group Engineers Programme

ArcelorMittal needs young talent and mobile engineers to help us Transform Tomorrow. To do this, we have created the Group Engineers Programme. Only by creating a pool of globally mobile engineers - with strong potential for growth and the ability to assume leading positions in the future - will we be able to continue our growth plans worldwide.

NATURE OF THE JOB | |
· | The Group Engineer is typically hired after finishing the complete study of Engineer at one of the leading Universities recognised by the Group. However, also Engineers with experience - from external or internal - can qualify. |
· | The Group Engineer will work - after training - in one of the operational activities of AM : production, maintenance , process control & development, engineering , logistics, technical-commercial, et c |
· | The period of training combined with specific assignments can cover one or several domains of operations , and will typically be planned for 1 year, with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 12 months. Duration will be function of training speed and the length of the specific assignment(s) , the professional and personal characteristics of the Engineer, possibly also the previous experience. The training will normally be in the country of hiring , but part can be in another country (or even completely when in the country of origin the activities do not offer the right training possibilities). Part of the training - as well technical but primarily managerial - will be organised in cooperation with the AM University : cross cultural training, project management, team building and team management, communication & presentation skills for example. Advanced language learning of English or another language can be part of the training year, when necessary. A Supervising Engineer from the organisation where the training will take place, will be assigned to each Engineer: he will supervise the training and the assignment, and act also as a professional coach. An evaluation will be done at the end of the training period , coordinated by the local HR , using the GEDP. |
· | After the training period the Group Engineer will be appointed by AM in his/her first operational or project job , for a duration between 2 and 5 years AM will appoint him/her in the operational job that suits best with the study curriculum , the training and the results of the evaluation on the one side and with the needs of the company ‘s Workforce Planning for Engineers on the other side. The location of the first job will normally be directly in another country : the rules of the AM transfer Policy will apply. The first job can also be a job in the home country, in this special case for no longer then 2 years, which means that the assignment to a job in another country will be organised at a later moment of time : this situation can occur when another Engineer who was recently hired and who volunteers for the Group Program will be transferred and a newly hired will be appointed in his job. |
· | After the first job in the host country, different possibilities exist : 1 - a second mission in another country , with a new transfer 2 - an assignment back in the home country , that will be followed, at a later moment, by a second assignment outside the home country 3 - continuation in the host country organisation, when the host country is willing to offer a job opportunity : in this last case the Group Engineer cannot have the status of transferee longer then 5 years. In general AM will strive for the first assignment to be in a developed country and the second in a emerging country or vice versa, the need for learning best practices being the most important criterion. |
PRIMARY RESPONSABILITIES | |
· | During the period of training/first assignment(s) the Group Engineer is responsible for acquiring knowledge and skills that the home country organisation and the AM University transfer to him/her. Also language courses can be part of the program. |
· | During the job assignment the Group Engineer will be fully accountable for the function that the Company entrusts him/her and will be part of the host country organisation. The Engineer , who is a group resource, will collaborate with his Supervising Engineer in his training period, and with his Supervisor and the HR organisation in his later assignments, in order to develop his/her performance and potential , to grow his/her knowledge , skills and group competences. |
PROBLEM-SOLVING AND JOB COMPLEXITY | |
· | The nature of thinking will require solutions that can vary from elementary learned skills to activities that require constant improvement and search for breakthrough techniques, in collaboration with internal and external Specialists. |
· | The thinking environment will vary from challenging to very complex, depending on the state of the technology, the difficulties of the tasks , the availability of support and the work and living culture of the location and country. |
· | Special attention is to be given to the transfer of knowledge, skills and competences to the local organisation : the Group Engineer needs to invest in the best didactical approaches , that help create sustainable solutions for the organisation he/she is working for. |
FREEDOM TO ACT AND AUTONOMY | |
· | Within the established policies and objectives, the Group Engineer has significant freedom to act and is expected to build contacts within his department , and outside , inspired by the need of making people work together , but always with the objective to realise results, with a high sense for quality and excellence in execution. |
· | The Group Engineer will also work in a spirit of entrepreneurship and promote initiatives and good ideas within his/her organisation. His/her HR skills have to inspire others. |
EDUCATION | |
· | Master's degree from a leading University AM decides on the Universities that qualify and will enhance partnerships with preferred Universities. |
· | Languages : Good command of English and Chinese, both oral and written, Fluent in French / Germen / Spanish would be a plus. |
· |
Human Relations : critical.
