Firm Overview:
Cambridge Associates was formed in 1973 to provide investment services to a group of major university endowments in the United States. The firm grew out of a project undertaken for Harvard University by our two founders, James Bailey and Hunter Lewis, who were asked to conduct a comprehensive review of Harvard's approach to the investment of its endowment. Upon completion of the project, Jim and Hunter were hired by 11 other major university endowments to provide asset class research and recommendations based on their initial findings. We are proud to say that today, more than 40 years later, these 12 institutions continue to be clients of the firm.
Today, we provide investment consulting, financial planning and proprietary capital markets research to over 1,000 clients across 4 continents and 36 countries, including charities, colleges and universities, foundations, medical institutions, museums, other endowed nonprofit institutions, families, pension funds, insurance companies, and sovereign wealth funds. The firm advises on assets in all asset categories, including equities, bonds, non-US investments, real estate, venture capital, hedge funds, leveraged buyout funds, oil and gas partnerships, and many other types of investments. In China, we work with some of the country's largest and most sophisticated investors and continue to grow our client base here.
Cambridge Associates has a staff of more than 1,100 professionals, including 200 Investment Directors and 150 Investment Associates in our Global Investment Services department, based in eight offices located in Arlington, Beijing, Boston, Dallas, London, Menlo Park, Singapore and Sydney. We select our employees with great attention to realize their potential in becoming valuable members of a collegial, intelligent and hard-working team. Due to continued growth we are currently seeking to add a full-time Investment Associate in our Beijing office. We are currently recruiting for individuals who are either recent graduates or with up to 2 years of work experience. The new hire is expected to start work in early/mid 2016, with an opportunity to receive comprehensive training in one of our international offices after joining.
Investment Associate:
Investment Associates (IAs) work closely with members of the investment staff in providing investment and capital markets research, analysis, and advice to our clients. Responsibilities include gathering and analyzing historical asset allocation, spending, and performance data; evaluating financial histories; analyzing investment managers' portfolios; preparing exhibits and other presentation documentation; and answering client questions and requests. IAs often attend client and investment manager meetings.
Each IA is responsible for a number of different clients and handles several projects at once. Every IA is responsible for arranging his or her schedule and priorities in order to meet deadlines; however, there is a strong tradition of teamwork and cooperation among members of the investment associate staff to help manage the workload. Although the position involves quantitative analysis, there is also a strong qualitative component as IAs work to describe market conditions and relay investment recommendations to clients in written reports.
In order to better understand the IA position, the following list provides examples of the type of activities undertaken by an IA on a daily basis. Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list and as an IA progresses up the learning curve, more opportunities and detailed projects present themselves:
Given the stage of development of our Beijing office, the scope of work for an IA here may be broader than the typical IA role in our other offices as described above. Other activities an IA may perform here include conducting desktop research for business development efforts, preparing presentation materials for marketing meetings and attending these meetings if appropriate, participating in investment manager meetings or due diligence projects and producing written reports afterwards, and so on. Flexibility with regard to daily activities is an important consideration.
